Every year, at least 700,000 people die from drug-resistant infections. It is why scientists have described antibiotic resistance as one of the greatest global threats of the 21st Century. But researchers may be on their way to a solution. It turns out that bacteria communicate. If you can disrupt that communication, you can turn bacteria powerless as they can’t signal their cohorts to join the attack on the immune system. Antibiotics based on this principle could arrive on the market in 10 years.
