Something big is starting to develop in the U.S. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has proposed to give distributed energy resources (DERs)—batteries, solar panels, smart energy-management software—access to markets where they can compete directly with big power plants. This means that the clean energy industry can open to major new sources of investment, allowing the DER market to scale quickly. With about half of the U.S getting its energy from competitive markets, the proposal could trigger a massive switch to renewables sooner than we had anticipated.
