Excessive bleeding after giving birth is a particular problem amongst mothers in developing countries, accounting for up to 60 percent of maternal mortality cases. That’s why researchers have recreated a suit originally used to help astronauts during extreme acceleration into a version that applies pressure on a women’s lower body in order to drive blood upward. In its first trial in the hospital setting, it saved 13 out of 14 patients in shock. Best of all, the garment is not expensive to make and can be used well over a 100 times.
