By adding organic matter such as decaying plants and animal material that increase carbon in soil, farmers can improve crop yields, reduce erosion, improve water efficiency, and support beneficial microorganisms. Not only does it improve soil health, but it also reduces global warming pollution, which is why California is investing $7.5 million to promote farming methods that boost carbon levels in soil. With more than a quarter of California’s land used for agriculture, this program could benefit both the climate and the food on our plates.
