Donald Trump just released his immigration reform plan. It boils down to building a wall. There is another way. According to new research, published by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, people are less racist and more willing to open up borders when citizens and immigrants are seen as part of a common group. Such a common group identity, it was shown, could influence people’s views about immigrants whether they realize it or not. “A common national identity that doesn’t make ‘us versus them’ distinctions can reduce racism toward immigrants and help a multicultural society succeed”, said lead author, Jonas Kunst. The study was done in both the United States and Norway.
