Today’s Solutions: April 29, 2026

Hunters and gatherers had no need to worry about obesity. The theory is that they would eat as much as they could since they couldn’t be sure when the next supper was. This is a problem in our times, because there is plenty of food now, but our brains are not used to the situation yet. They keep telling us: eat it now, you’ll never know when your get more. How do we counteract this problem? With mindfulness, says Eric Loucks, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Brown University. In a recent study, he found people who live in the moment tend to have less body fat. Loucks thinks eating healthier and exercising more requires thought and self-regulation and encourages all of us to take a little pause before you eat. Do you feel hungry? Eat. But if you don’t, you can wait. The food won’t go anywhere.
