Today’s Solutions: July 20, 2025

While most of the world was diverting from coal last year, 155 planned coal plants in China were approved by the government in 2015 alone. Now it seems China is having some doubts about those plans. In response to growing fears that the country’s coal power sector is suffering from worsening overcapacity, the Chinese government will block the construction of new coal-fired plants in 15 regions, effecting a total of 250 power projects across the country. The move follows a similar effort by regulators to ban new coal mine developments in China until at least 2019 and could mean the beginning of the end for coal in China as new reports suggest that the country’s growing clean energy sources may be sufficient enough to meet all of China’s projected electricity needs.
