Most foods found in our supermarkets are wrapped in plastic packaging that can only be used once before being tossed. This type of packaging creates a lot of waste, and it’s not very good at preventing food from spoiling. That’s why scientists have created a viable alternative to plastic packaging with a biodegradable film made from milk proteins that’s sustainable and edible. The film is also up to 500 times better than plastics at keeping oxygen away from food, allowing food to be saved for longer periods of time. The scientists hope their milk-based film will help to keep food fresh during shipping while decreasing the amount of plastic waste entering landfills.
