A Spanish company is proposing a radical new way to generate wind energy: creating wind turbines that have no blades. Their wind turbine, which they call the Vortex, looks like a giant rolled joint shooting into the sky. Unlike conventional turbines which use wind gusts to create energy, the Vortex uses something called vorticity—whirlpools of wind spinning around a single point—to turn vibrations into energy. The makers of the Vortex claim that turbine is a better alternative to conventional wind turbines because it uses no gears, bolts, or mechanically moving parts, making it far cheaper to manufacture and maintain.
