While it’s tempting to think that the air inside your house or office is clean, the truth is quite the opposite. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the air inside the average home is up to five times more polluted than the air outside.

That’s an alarming fact, especially considering that we city dwellers spend up to 90 percent of our time indoors. The good thing is house plants are pretty nifty air-purifiers that can fight the nasty toxins in your home.

For a clean home with clean air, try adding this small list of houseplants to your decor.

Mother-in-Laws’ Tongue

This first houseplant has a hilarious name and a beautiful look. This elegant flora has long, tongue-like leaves with sharp pointed tips and is known to remove at least 107 different air pollutants, including carbon monoxide and chloroform. Best of all, it is extremely resilient and can go weeks without water.

The Money Plant

Money Plants are another special species that will both liven up your home and clean the air. The plant earns its common name from its traditional use as a wealth booster in the Chinese system of feng shui. Whether or not it will bring you wealth is something you’ll have to find out for yourself, but this plant will do a superb job of removing volatile compounds related to synthetic paint or carpets.

The Peace Lily

With a deep forest green color and little white flowers, this plant effectively removes all common indoor pollutants generated by furniture, electronics, and cleaning products.

Bamboo Palm

Place this beautiful little plant in your home to naturally help humidify your space and help you breathe.
