Like arugula and kale, watercress is a nutrient-dense leafy green, but unlike other options, its benefits are not as well known. If you’re getting bored of your go-to greens, check out these five health benefits of watercress and add it to your grocery list!

Health benefits

1. Good for bone health

Watercress is high in both vitamin K and calcium, which are both great for bone health. Just one cup of chopped watercress has 41 mg of calcium.

2. Heart healthy

Watercress is full of antioxidants while its calcium, potassium, magnesium, and nitrates help combat high blood pressure.

3. May help prevent cancer

The leafy green is high in isothiocyanates that reduce inflammation and help rid the body of carcinogens.

4. Helps manage diabetes symptoms

Watercress has alpha-lipoic acid antioxidants which lower blood sugar and prevent insulin resistance.

5. Good for the eyes

Watercress contains both carotenoids and vitamin C which help maintain eye health.

How to cook watercress

Watercress is delicious enjoyed raw in salads or gently cooked in stir frys. It can also be blended into smoothies or pesto sauces. Ask your doctor before incorporating watercress into your diet if you take blood thinners as they can interfere with blood clotting.
