Here at The Optimist Daily, we are great admirers of the beloved children’s show Sesame Street. This educational program has expanded its representation to include muppets of a variety of backgrounds, abilities, and identities to show children how wonderful and diverse the people of our world are. It shows how much stronger we are when we appreciate and respect each other, not in spite of our differences, but because of them.

The show also gives children an opportunity to recognize their own struggles during dark times when they may not yet have the language or capacity to voice or understand them. Now, to support the many children and families who are affected by the conflict present in this chaotic moment in history, Sesame Street is at it again with the unveiling of a new character, Ameera.

Ameera is set to debut on Ahlan Simsim, the local version of Sesame Street that is broadcasted in the Middle East and North Africa. The new muppet is a curious eight-year-old who loves science and basketball. Due to a spinal cord injury, viewers will either see her rolling around in a bright purple wheelchair or walking with the help of forearm crutches. She has a great sense of humor and is a natural leader who wants her friends to strive to be the best they can be.

In a statement, the President of Sesame Workshop Sherrie Westin said:

“Thoughtfully designed to challenge stereotypes and reflect children’s lived experiences, Ameera brings visibility to the more than 12 million displaced persons and 240 million children worldwide estimated to have a disability as well as to the important role of girls in STEM.

“At a time when more children than ever before are affected by conflict and displacement, Ameera also highlights the urgent need for creative and flexible approaches to delivering playful learning and early education to communities affected by the crisis.”
