While there’s more testing than real life to self-driving cars, it seems they will be part of the future. Automakers like Audi, BMW, Ford and Toyota continue developing their versions of the technology and Google sends driverless cars around the streets of California. Meanwhile, president Obama recently announced his administration will spend almost $4 billion over 10 years to test automated cars and other connected vehicle systems in designated corridors around the US. Reports show this may save fuel and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. Cars that talk to each other can flow right by each other at intersections, avoiding stopping and starting. Smart routing systems can make moving around more efficient, reducing congestion. Vehicles driving directly behind one another because their systems are linked might reduce air drag, experts claim. All this would make a huge impact as the sector’s carbon footprint is second only to the power sector.
