Social investing has a reputation of getting minimal financial returns, but that may change thanks to companies like Generation Investment Group. Run by former US vice president Al Gore, Generation is pioneering a new type of investing that focuses on long-term financial returns through sustainable projects. Numerous studies show that a company or project’s value is determined by its long-term performance, and that short-term orientation has negative repercussions for businesses and the global economy. Many investors have become accustomed to fast, high returns with companies like Snapchat or Facebook, but with technology improving rapidly, successful sustainable solutions are more viable than ever and investment groups like Generation want to support that. The Generation model requires more patience because socially conscious companies can take longer to reach similar levels of success. However, those who are willing to take the longer route can enjoy better returns down the line.
