Hydrogen will be a key part of the sustainable economy as it can provide storage for solar and wind energies that are not always available. Solar and wind electricity can be used to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen can then be used to power a fuel cell to generate electricity when you need it. There’s still one challenge: Splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen isn’t that hard, but it is expensive, in part due to the precious metals needed for the catalyzers used in the process.
