As the rise of solar power continues to create jobs, workers in the coal industry keep losing theirs. That’s why one organization in Colorado is pioneering a new program that trains former coal workers in the field of solar energy in the hope of helping them find jobs. The program allows the workers to take basic training courses or pursue a Professionals Certificate Program free of charge. The creators of the program believe the miners’ experience with mechanics and electrical engineering will make the transition to solar a smooth one. If successful, the program could be a blueprint for other states or countries experiencing major cuts in the coal industry.
