The idea of the basic income has sparked worldwide interest in the past few years. Finland is determined to find out if it is a new way for the government to take care of its citizens, and is designing its largest basic income experiment ever. Starting in 2017, 100,000 citizens could get 1,000 euro each month, no strings attached. For two years, they’ll get this fixed amount of money, without having to work for it. One of the ideas behind the basic income is that it will reduce income inequality in society. The Finnish government will use the experiment to measure several effects: How much do people on basic income want to work? What is their level of well-being and happiness? And, how much do they use public services, like clinics and hospitals? We can’t wait for the results.
