Tunisian officials approved a bill that permits both men and women to have equal rights to inheritance, making it the first Arab nation to take such an initiative. The legislation contradicts the Qur’an which states the share of women’s inheritance is half that of men’s. The law also safeguards a freedom of choice between following the constitution or the Sharia Islamic law. This is an important achievement for advocates of social freedom and gender equality in the region.
