We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: carving out time in your schedule for regular exercise and time spent in nature is an essential part of self-care that touts numerous benefits both for your body and your mind.

One of the most efficient ways to do both at once is to get outside for a walking workout. We’ve shared plenty of stories already about what you stand to gain by sticking to a daily walk, but let’s face it—sometimes walks can get repetitive and boring.

Power walk with a pooch

If you have a dog already then you’re probably already hitting the trails with your furry friend, which is great because studies show that walking with a pup actually increases your overall activity level. 

If you’re not a dog owner, then consider checking in with your local animal shelter to volunteer for weekly dog walks, or maybe reach out to dog-owning neighbors to see if they would appreciate your help a couple of times a week. Doing so won’t just make your walk more interesting, but could potentially strengthen connections within your community, too.

Make it a friend outing

Instead of constantly going solo, use your daily walk as an opportunity to invite a friend out for a brisk stroll and a catch-up. “I love calling up a friend to take a walk while we chat and grab a coffee,” Jones says. If you aim for a moderate pace, then you can get your heart rate up but still engage in conversation.

If you can’t meet in person, then giving your chosen friend a ring while on your walk also works.

Explore new places

If you usually walk the same path over and over again, try to get out of your comfort zone by picking out a trail you haven’t explored yet. Look online for other people’s recommended trails for scenic views or pick a destination to reach like a neighborhood you haven’t visited yet or a new cafe that you haven’t tried.

Get lost in an audiobook

Jones suggests downloading an episode of your favorite podcast or a book that you’ve been meaning to read—if you become immersed in the story, then you might even walk for longer without even realizing it!
