Overpopulation is perceived to be a big threat in many future environmental scenarios. But should we really be concerned about too many people on the planet? Advance countries, like Italy and Japan, are dealing with declining populations. That would also be the case in Germany were it not for net migration from other countries (which means that there are fewer people in these countries). The trend is the same around the globe: where there’s more wealth there are fewer births. Now the U.S. is reporting that the number of babies born per female is lower than ever since statistics were tracked. In the past ten years the U.S, fertility rate has dropped 10 percent.
