Sugar cravings—we all have them. They’re probably the most challenging obstacle to overcome when we’re trying our darndest to stick to a healthy diet that we know is good for our body and mind. Luckily, there are ways we can fight off intense sugar cravings when they rear their heads.

One of the most effective ways to combat sugar cravings is to ensure that you’re eating plenty of nutrient-dense foods throughout the day so that you feel more satiated. However, if you have an off-day and can feel the sugar cravings creeping up on you, Medical Expert Board member and registered dietician Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN says that there’s a specific snack that you should reach for. Prunes.

According to Manaker, prunes can help slash sugar cravings for two main reasons:

They’re filling

Prunes are filling and can stop hunger pangs in their tracks. “According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition Bulletin, people who snacked on prunes felt less hungry and ate fewer calories overall than people who snacked on raisins or jelly beans,” Manaker explains. “And prune snackers also experienced better appetite control compared to those who snacked on raisins or jelly beans.”

They’re sweet (without the sugar)

Consuming added sugar has addictive qualities in our brain neurochemistry, so if we can simply address our need for something sweet without adding to our sugar intake, then we won’t find ourselves craving sugar even more intensely later.

“Prunes are naturally sweet, a factor that may help satisfy a sweet tooth,” Manaker says. “Plus, unlike candy, they contain natural antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, along with fiber to make them a satiating food.”

So, if you struggle with sugar cravings, making sure you have a stock of prunes should help you get through them.
